The burden of proof will always be on those that state something exists. It is not for those who don't believe to disprove it. It's the classic Russell's teapot question.

Well said, I agree.

For those of you who think you are smarter because you don't believe in a creator, remember this... There is just as much evidence that a creator exists as their is that it doesn't exist. It takes just as much faith to believe in a creator as it does to not believe in one.

I am a theist and this is too illogical for me to handle

Well I did give an argument a few posts down. If you don't want to read it, that's fine with me.

The same way dance and gourmet cuisine were invented, sure.

I seriously doubt someone sat down in their cave one day, decided they were sick and tired of charred fish, and decided to invent a souffle.

I read it and it was no better than your original post.

If you feel the need to try and tell atheists that they're just as bound by faith as you are, you don't really understand what faith is and probably don't have all that strong of faith in the first place.

Religion is illogical. Any theist can tell you that. It's that precise reason why faith is needed and imo it's illogic makes religion all the more worthwhile. If religion were truly logical and self-evident no faith would be needed at all and most personal investment would be severed entirely.

Anyways my point is, I believe and you believe. Neither of us know. To say that one side is wrong is just ignorant.

people who really don't believe in a god aren't going around actively not believing in it, unless they're communicating with people who do. It's usually irrelevant to them.

This, so much. It just doesn't affect my life. I never think about it.

I would hesitate to say 'I believe' because I don't know for sure - I'm waiting for evidence and not seeing any (about gods). It appears that there aren't any.

What are you talking about? They've found Noah's ark at least a half dozen times!

They haven't found the ark, but even if they had, it would prove nothing.

Scholars thought the city of Troy from the Trojan war was a legend until they discovered it.

But the discovery of Troy didn't prove the existence of the God Zeus or the other Greek Gods and Goddessess. It just proved the existence of the city of Troy.

Of course it was invented. By man. I mean, if some unearthly being made religion, then why would it want to only be worshipped by man? Why not every living being?
6 yrs ago - Sunday 5/1/16 - 10:33:31 PM EST (GMT-5)
absolutely. there are many attempts and iterations of it even.

i'm more of an iphone 4 kind of guy if it just had more storage space.

personally.
6 yrs ago - Sunday 5/1/16 - 10:35:10 PM EST (GMT-5)
by which i mean golf is religion.

My favorite part in the Bible is when Moses comes down from the mountain and Aaron's set up his own new religion with statues and everything because Moses had been gone so long, so Moses takes him aside and is like "What the hell?" and Aaron goes "I thought you were dead!" and Moses says "Don't worry, I can fix this." and he goes up to the people and says "The LORD knew all about this and He said you shall worship but one LORD!" and he smashes all the idols.

I don't know why they left it in there, it just makes them sound like they're actually making it all up.

It depends on what you mean by "invented". If you're talking crazy conspiracy to keep people doing X,Y,Z... No, that's crazy. If you mean it's something that's not naturally occurring with out intent that is done? Well, yeah, obviously.

I agree w/ the first part of this. I can't quite make out what he said in the second part.

My second part would be that the structure of religion is definitely man-made. And we probably get further and further afield as time goes on.

Frankly, even on concrete things everyone accepts as real, like paper clips, our perception and understanding are still human, so anything we understand in the slightest, even just to acknowledge its existence, is filtered through the human capacity for awareness.

Religions have evolved over time.

From the very basic ancestor worship, animalism and planetary deification. People have tried to rationalize the existential.

If you felt an afinity to your dead parents then it would seem reasonable to think that they are still around.... which raises the question of an afterlife.

If hunting is more productive during a full moon it would seem reasonable to treat that time as auspicious. If small family groups came together to hunt larger prey it would seem reasonable to create a bonding amongst the group, incorporating rituals to improve the chances of success. I imagine such colabarations required an uderstanding of common conduct in order to prevent mayhem on a regular basis.

It's interesting that humans have evolved with a fertility cycle that is exactly in tune with the orbit of the moon. To me that suggests lots of after hunt sex..
