I’m sure if I could travel back in time and relive the years from 1999 to 2007 and note all the increases in grocery store automation, I’d agree with you. My city has them. I do not pump my own gas. And I’m not an idiot and prefer that you don’t condescend to me.

Your articles didn’t back up your original point at all which stated that increasing the minimum wage would cause all of these jobs to go away to automation.

The fact that automation is taking over many of those jobs to begin with is just an indication that raising labor costs is only going to make the payback faster for employers looking to automate.

No condescension was intended, but your 'around here' didn't seem to match what is happening everywhere else.

Your “around here” was about your area. Mine was about mine. Both I the current age. Your quote was about what happened from 1999-2007.

Automation is also just one piece of the puzzle. The article I posted talked about hours being cut as well as jobs being eliminated- - not necessarily replaced by automation. Some businesses ended up closing down, others just get by with fewer employees.

Either way, they estimated that the average low wage worker lost $125 per month per job due to the minimum wage increase.

"According to RBR, global shipments of self-checkout terminals increased 52% year over year in 2019, with that growth driven by the U.S. market, including food retailers. Wegmans, Costco and other large food retailers are helping to lead the charge, with convenience store chains also getting involved." [link]

For one of the articles. The other article talked about the increase in years leading into 2019...

You are in DC, right?

"Early evidence suggests that DC’s minimum wage law is having a negative effect on the city’s restaurant employment"

Good stuff from a conservative think tank from 5 years ago that even states it’s not really reliable enough.

So then I guess we are back to analyzing the effects the minimum wage increase had on Seattle. It doesn't seem all that unreasonable to predict that employers respond to an increase in labor costs in a variety of fashions, most of which are negatives for the workers.
6 months ago - Tuesday 5/11/21 - 9:11:23 PM EST (GMT-5)
As opposed to living in poverty which is positive for the workers.

CD seems to speak with a forked tongue, with one prong he talks of worker mobility into better paid employment and with the other he decries the reduction of low paid labour intensive positions.

What an increase in minimum wage achieves in part is that employers are compelled to utilize their workforce more efficiently. Workers don't necessarily need to retrain to a higher paid industry but be trained to be more productive in their own workplace. EG that greeter who stands in the entrance. Retail isn't a closed economic system. Retail staff can make or break a store by generating more sales, preventing more theft and generally improving the atmosphere on the sales floor.

When I used to wholesale my own goods I would often be faced with a choice of outlets to supply in the same area. The shop with the girl in the corner with her head buried in a book was never my 1st choice.

Then there was Lena.

I was still working my own pitch in Camden market when I was accosted by a 17 year old Finnish girl.

Give me job she demanded.. I don't get no benefit in this f*cking country and I live in the squash (Squat). If you don't give me job I will have to sell my arse in King' Cross so I will work so f*cking hard for you because no way I want have to sell my arse.

She did, a year later she was running her own pitch for me in another market area.

The $15 minimum wage increase hasn't solved poverty, and actually made things worse for the average low wage worker.
