I’ll hold my tongue until I actually see the movies nominated. I only saw Dunkirk.
3 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Monday 3/5/18 - 12:03:08 AM EST (GMT-5)
I never expected CMBYN to win anything other than screenplay, to be honest.

I think of Shape of Water and just think fish sex. But at least the Darkest Hour didn't win.

And meh @ Gary Oldman. The presenters made a point of saying they were breaking new ground and making changes and then gave the award to an old white dude playing another old white dude. Boring.

I didn’t watch the darkest hour, but his transformation was pretty amazing. They won for best makeup yeah?
3 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Monday 3/5/18 - 12:09:01 AM EST (GMT-5)
Makeup I get. Everything else, eh
3 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Monday 3/5/18 - 12:12:12 AM EST (GMT-5)
I just wasn’t too surprised he won for that one. Haven’t seen a couple of the films tho.
3 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Monday 3/5/18 - 12:24:33 AM EST (GMT-5)
I think Gary Oldman was a little bit of a legacy win (like DiCaprio for The Revenant…tbh Oldman should've won for Bram Stoker's Dracula).
As a whole, I didn't think Darkest Hour was that great. But there was nothing "Meh" about his performance.
3 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Monday 3/5/18 - 12:55:42 AM EST (GMT-5)
I wasn't fond of The Shape of Water, and would have prefered almost anything else to have won (except Darkest Hour).

Del Toro should have won for Pan's Labyrinth, not this one.

Having said that, Oldman was good in a very average movie. Not surprised he won.

Yay Roger Deakin!
3 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Monday 3/5/18 - 12:58:56 AM EST (GMT-5)
(Phantom Thread was my fave this year, closely followed by Three Billboards and Dunkirk.)
3 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Monday 3/5/18 - 1:35:30 AM EST (GMT-5)
I totally agree about Pan's Labyrinth.
3 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Monday 3/5/18 - 1:36:58 AM EST (GMT-5)
And yeah, Roger Deakin has been passed over for a LONG while. I actually haven't seen BR2049 yet, but I'm glad he was finally recognized.

I’m a bit baffled by your statement.
3 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Monday 3/5/18 - 1:42:50 AM EST (GMT-5)
Which part? You should be more specific.
3 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Monday 3/5/18 - 1:43:45 AM EST (GMT-5)
I will be clear in saying I've literally only seen CMBYN, so my opinion of SoW is based on what close friends have told me. Also, I know someone that watched DH and were very underwhelmed.

The presenters part is spot on, though.
3 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Monday 3/5/18 - 1:53:28 AM EST (GMT-5)
Uhhhhh, yeah. If you haven't seen The Shape of Water and your only comment on it is "I just think of fish sex" you should probably either a) see the film, or b) not make such a crazy-reductive statement about it.
3 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Monday 3/5/18 - 1:56:05 AM EST (GMT-5)
(I'm not even saying that in defense of its win, btw. But it's like saying Three Billboards is just the story of a grieving mother.)
3 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Monday 3/5/18 - 1:56:25 AM EST (GMT-5)
It was kind of just a joke, but ok.
3 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Monday 3/5/18 - 2:05:17 AM EST (GMT-5)
OK. I just think it's weird to base your opinion on having only seen one of the nominees, and "my friend said this" or "some people said that."
3 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Monday 3/5/18 - 2:13:33 AM EST (GMT-5)
I feel vaguely disappointed that the acadrmy had gone for the schmaltzy movie again.

There were so many interesting and challenging stories, and it chose a rehash of beauty and the beast, for crying out loud.

I kinda agree - I mean, I try to watch all the films in the main categories - but then, judging which bit of art is better than another is also a bit weird.
3 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Monday 3/5/18 - 2:24:27 AM EST (GMT-5)
Yeah I mean I have a hard time arguing with an earnest belief that one film or the other was artistically better or worse than another (except in certain cases, like let's not even talk about Shakespeare in Love and what a travesty that was…)
I mean I'll entertain a lot of differing opinions, anyway.
(But my vote would've gone to Three Billboards)
3 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Monday 3/5/18 - 2:31:17 AM EST (GMT-5)
Like I will fully own up to loving The Silent Child because my aunt was born deaf, and it hit me in ways that some of the other shorts didn't. I'm glad it won, but I could see the argument for some of the other nominees.

The second half.
3 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Monday 3/5/18 - 2:34:52 AM EST (GMT-5)
That is also fair. The presenters aren't responsible for who wins. They're just the messenger.

It was great, but I felt it was too black and white. Which is good if you’re doing a sensibilisation film, but not an artistic project.

The award should have gone to the young white dude playing a gay white dude!

I'm kidding.

Honestly, for best actor, anyone could have won and i'd have been 'oh, ok.'
