The "every 3 hours" thing must've also helped.
Three big meals a day dumps a mass of calories onto your metabolism, and it never gets round to burning down one meal before the next comes crashing in. It gets to work overnight, but the fat backs up over time.

Eating smaller portions at more frequent intervals keeps your metabolism working throughout the day, burning the small foods before moving onto body fat.
