Steampunk is all about role playing the technology and aesthetic of pre-modern science fiction, a la Jules Vernse. They're sometimes known as 'the brown goths' (not because they're ethnic, but due to the fact that brown is a color they frequently wear). They're also big on things made of brass, especially aviator goggles.
